I first make certain that the barrel in the lathe is rotating on the centerline of the bore. My lathe has a homemade chuck on the rear of the headstock so the barrel position can be accurately adjusted. This is usually accomplished using indicator pins in each end of the bore and two accurate dial indicators. I personally prefer a straight, polished crown with the end of the lands polished round with a brass ball and polishing compound. This insures that the bullet will leave the barrel with even pressure escaping uniformly around the bore. Some customers prefer 11 degree crowns and they work well also but provide no better accuracy than the straight crown and are more difficult to polish. My final bore polishing is done with 600 grit polishing compound.
